AORN OF SAN JOSE February President’s Message
Happy 2010!
Let’s wrap up the old and usher in the new:
OLD The CNOR Prep Course was a HUGE success!
You may recall, we had decided to offer this as a service to the OR Nurses in the community, and hopefully gain some new chapter members as attendees later signed up to take the exam. We were hoping to break even, but had no reason to expect we would. Well! We had 76 paid signups, and actually have come away financially ahead. The coming months will show whether we will have gained new members. Great Job!
This required the help of so many people during the two-day event. First and Foremost, to Molly Attell from Kaiser Santa Clara, the most heartfelt thank you. Molly stepped up when our original venue fell through, and went through all the necessary hoops to make Kaiser available for us. AND, she came to troubleshoot for us on her birthday (a milestone one, too). She came through, once again.
Then there were the registrants, the coffee pick ups & drop offs, the certificate handlers, the movers and the shakers:
Didi Perez, Priscilla Kyle, Virginia Olson, Rosa Barry, Millie Malinao, Lana Johnson, Myrna Bernardo, Margaret Smith, and Mary Lou Jackson.
Then there was Mimi Pass who covered her dining room table with delicious home baked cookies! Dozens and dozens!
Thank you ALL.
NEW Please look elsewhere in this newsletter and the last one for the forms we need from you, and the addresses for where to send them:
Congress Delegate forms need to be to Rosa Barry by Jan 31. (The Feb meeting is too late!)
Willingness to Serve forms (for officers and Board and Committee) should be brought to the Feb. 3 meeting.
The Spring Workshop is in its planning stages. Please volunteer to help!
Thanking you all who participate in the program. Your ideas and energy are what keep us going.
Allyson

Meeting Minutes from the AORN San Jose Chapter Board Meeting
Wednesday, January 6, 2010
The Board meeting was called to order by Chapter President Allyson Kuppens at 1735.
Board Members Present: Allyson Kuppens, Margaret Smith, Rosa Barry, Molly Attell, Millie Malinao, Lana Johnson, and Mary Tambellini
There was a discussion on the CNOR Prep Workshop. Our Chapter made approximately $3,809.00 from the course, so it was successful far beyond anything we had expected.
Congress delegate forms are due by January 27, so if you are interested in being a delegate to Congress, please complete the form included in the last newsletter and e-mail it to Lana Johnson
@ Lanaraejohnson@hotmail.com.
Willingness to Serve forms are due by February 3. If you have any interest in serving your local AORN Chapter, from President to the Nominating Committee, you can obtain the form from Lana at the above
e-mail.
The next Operating Room Nursing Council of California (ORNCC) meeting will be held in Ontario, CA, on February 6, 2010. The ORNCC is the legislative and regulatory arm for issues related to perioperative nurses. Additionally, they act as liaisons to other nursing organizations, provide education, resources, and communicate with other AORN State Chapters. They meet 4 times a year in various areas of the state, with the 4th meeting being held at Congress each year. Each year at Congress, they hold a luncheon meeting that includes an educational topic for AORN delegates. If you are interested in ORNCC, you can access their Website at: www.orncc.org
The Spring Workshop will be held on Saturday, April 17 this year. Mary Lou Jackson and Anna Griggs from Stanford will be the hosts, and the topic has not been finalized yet, so save the date. Anyone interested in volunteering to help at this workshop can contact President Allyson at: sunnycalifornia3@hotmail.com.
Stanford will be hosting the February meeting and Molly Attell offered to host the March meeting.
January 10 is the “soft”deadline for newsletter items. If you have something you would like in the Chapter newsletter, please e-mail it to our newsletter editor, Lana Johnson.
The Chapter Meeting was called to order at 7:43 pm by President Allyson.
Treasurer’s Report-Total balance on hand as of January 2010 is approximately $31,000.00
Jill Stanfield suggested that our Chapter consider a donation to the 2013 Tournament of Roses Parade. One of the Tournament Board Members is a perioperative nurse and this will be the first time nurses have ever sponsored a float by and for nurses. There will be a brief Board meeting prior to the February meeting to decide on Congress delegates, Chapter sponsorship amount, and donation amounts.
We now have an active Chapter Website that is updated regularly by Vice President Virginia Olson. Please refer to it for Chapter meeting dates, directions to meetings, announcements, workshops, etc. To access it, go to www.AORN.org. Click on the Community tab, then click on Chapters, Chapter Websites, then scroll down to California and click on 0513 San Jose. Kudos to Virginia!
Allyson reminded everyone that we are allowed to have 8 delegates and 2 alternates to Congress, so everyone was encouraged to get their delegate forms to Rosa Barry. Allyson received a CD from AORN Headquarters that included what’s new at Congress, issues that will be discussed, etc. Allyson asked for a volunteer to report back at the next meeting and provide feedback. Margaret Smith volunteered to do this.
The meeting was adjourned at 8:15 pm
Meeting minutes respectfully submitted by Molly Attell, Chapter Secretary
