PROGRAM: IS YOUR OPERATING ROOM PREPARED TO HANDLE A DISASTER?

COURSE DESCRIPTION: What is the planned response of the Operating Room to a Code Disaster? Would you know what to do “after hours”? Do you know what your department is required to do? As a Perioperative professional, what is your role in a county-wide disaster? The speaker will discuss Emergency Operations Plans and how your Perioperative Services Department response is coordinated with local, county, regional, and state governments, other healthcare systems, and volunteer organizations.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of the this class, the participant will be able to:

1. Define H.I.C.S. (Hospital Incident Command System) and the role of the OR in a Disaster.
2. Describe what a H.V.A. (Hazard Vulnerability Analyzer) is and how it can affect the needs for austere care.
3. Explain how the JCAHO Emergency Management Standards and the Environment of Care applies to the OR.
4. State what external resources are available and what the government can do for you.
5. Define your "ACTIVE" role in the next disaster.

Directions to Eden Medical Center, 20103 Lake Chabot Road, Castro Valley

From Oakland: Take 580 East. Follow the signs to "Hayward/Stockton." Exit at Strobridge Ave. At the end of the exit ramp, turn left onto Strobridge. Go to the stoplight. Turn right onto Castro Valley Blvd. At the first stoplight (Lake Chabot Road), turn left. Turn left at the first stoplight on Lake Chabot Road for Eden's entrance. Stay over to the left for the conference center.

From Walnut Creek, Pleasanton, Dublin: Take 680 North or South to the 680/580 interchange. Take 580 West to Castro Valley. Exit at Strobridge Ave. to the right. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right. At the stoplight, turn right onto Castro Valley Blvd. At the first stoplight (Lake Chabot Road), turn left. Turn left at the first stoplight on Lake Chabot Road for Eden's entrance. Stay over to the left for the conference center.

From Berkeley, Oakland, Montclair: Take Highway 13 (via Ashby Ave. in Berkeley) south until it merges with 580 East. Follow the directions above.
