ORNCC Report 5-3-08
By
Marla Gonzales, RN, MN, CNOR, CNS
May 3, I attended the ORNCC as the Chapter Representative. Jill Stanfield gave an update on the RNFA’s. They will celebrate their one year anniversary in July. They are still looking to get a Federal Bill for Financial Reimbursement for RNFA’s. They are happy about AORN’s affiliation with ANA. ANA has 8 lobbyist in Washington DC. There were three AORN National Board members at the ORNCC meeting.
The Board members reported that the AORN Board is working on Standardizing Perioperative Record using PNDS and incorporating regulatory requirements. Once this is completed AORN would sell this to software companies. The Board sees the organization as a repository for data. The Board hopes to have a standardized Perioperative Record available in 6 months. The National Legislative Committee is “alive & well”. There will be a nurse in Washington internship again in July. Members interested must apply. AORN’s affiliation with ANA becomes effective July 1, 2008. June 30, will mark the dissolution of the Bargaining Union of ANA. There was report that Speciality Assemblies need more structure. Maybe there is a need for this and maybe there isn’t. It would make sense that larger Speciality Assemblies need more structure, but the smaller ones probably don’t. The Foundation is hoping to raise 10 million dollars over the next 5 years. It can be done if each of the companies donates one million dollars each over 5 years. There are 9 companies that belong to AORN Foundation. The Board members are trying to visit AORN Chapters. The AORN Foundation has money for speakers for weekend workshops. Brain Tapp is new AORN Membership Director. AORN Orientation programs are going online. If Chapters are struggling the Board members are asking for AORN members to let the Board know. They will try to help. There are new Sterilization and new Skin Prepping Recommended Practices.
Legislative report was given by Lydia Miller. For full contents see ORNCC web site.
CalNoc is supported by the Betty Gordon Fund and needs to become self supporting. When a facility joins CalNoc, it takes about one year for them to be fully on board. There is a site fee. They review and monitor the indicators looking for trends and “best practices”. There is talk that to become a magnet hospital you may have to belong to CalNoc.
California Institute of Healthcare (CIN) has raised the capacity in nursing schools. There has been a 69% increase in graduates this year from last year. The National Summit will be in June. In 2022, will be the next time need to meet a large demand for nurses. 54% of today’s nurses are BSN and MN prepared.
BRN is considering a preceptorship with faculty. So that faculty will be paired with clinical partner from hospitals. The hospital partner would not have to meet the standards of the faculty as long as they were partnered with a faculty member. There will be hearing on this issue May 13, in Northern California and May 15, in Southern California.
AORN will have their Leadership meeting July 25-27 in Denver. Foundation money is available for those Chapters who can not afford to send a representative. There is a disaster preparedness survey on ORNCC website. Members are encouraged to complete the survey. Thursday, June 12, Patrick Voight, AORN President Elect will be attending AORN San Francisco/Marin installation banquet.
