ORNCC meeting Ontario 2/2/08

ORNCC met on February 2. Report from Mary Jo Steiert (AORN President) revealed AORN is pursuing joint membership with other nursing organizations; 1) ANA 2) ASPAN 3) OR Manager. Medical Association recently invited AORN to meeting to find out what AORN is all about. When asked “what is the biggest challenge for Nurses in dealing with physicians in the OR?” the response was “respect” for the RN, circulator. This has happened with Linda Groah as executive Director of AORN. AORN was also invited by WHO (World Health Organization) to “Safe Surgical Summit” in Switzerland. Discussed were safety issues as they relate to the operative patient. Only a few nursing organizations were invited AORN, Europe and United Kingdom OR-RN’s and Kenya. Infection control Nurses from Thailand were also invited. Lola Farr is AORN’s new parliamentarian. She reviewed the changes in schedule at AORN Congress in Anaheim. Tried to be more inclusive and decrease the cost of dinners, awards etc. so more people can attend. Knott’s Berry Farm will only be open to AORN members on Wednesday night during congress. Any registrant can buy any number of tickets for $25.00 each ticket. AORN has a position statement on Criminalization of Human errors in the OR, and Position Statement of Smoke and Bio-aerosols in the OR. During Forums the goal is to decrease reporting time and increase discussion time.
California luncheon will be Monday, March 31 11:30-1:00pm. The entrée will be chef salad and dessert for $45.00. The speaker will be Trisha Hunter. Bylaws were reviewed, amended and passed. New ORNCC Brochure was distributed. Legislative report for California by Lydia Miller, and Federal by Shelly Carroll was given. They are available on the ORNCC website. The Federal Legislation that deal with AORN’s priorities are RN as Circulator, Preserving Scope of Practice for OR-RN, Workplace Safety are what AORN is monitoring.
California has not passed the 2007 Budget that was to pass by July. If not passed by March 2008, there will not be any new legislation, per the Governor.
CalNOC strategic priorities, looking at 5 indicators; nosicomial infection, falls, decubuti, UTI, and pneumonia. CalNOC conference is April 7-9 Universal Hilton. Suzanne Ward wants to mentor someone to take over the function of attending and reporting on this meeting, Representing ORNCC. At the ACNL (Association of California Nurse Leaders) meeting, Inez Tenzer will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Her husband will receive it on her behalf.
2013, ORNCC will have a Float in the Rose Parade. Sally Bixby will be the President of the Tournament of Roses Parade. Sally is Director of Perioperative Services at Huntington Memorial Hospital and a member of AORN. She was born in Pasadena, California.
ORNCC elected a new chair and secretary. New Chair is Shelly Carroll and the new secretary Ron Bennett.
