President’s Message
Dear AORN of Southern Arizona Members,
What a wonderful week I had in Washington, DC at the AORN 53rd Congress. As I look back now, things are kind of a blur. It was so exciting being part of the opening session, and walking down the aisle as your Chapter President. I want to thank the Board and Membership for the lovely bouquet of flowers that brightened my room during my stay at Congress.
The visit to Capitol Hill to talk with Senator Kyl’s legislative assistant was a wonderful opportunity for our organization to advocate for Patient safety. We discussed the importance of one perioperative registered nurse circulator dedicated to every patient. Our concerns regarding the nursing shortage were also stated.
The Arizona Surgicats came in second at the second annual “Quiz Bowl”. We had a great time and learned a great deal about evidence based nursing practice.
As Delegates, we were able to participate in shaping the future of our professional organization by electing our new leaders. We were able to take part in the discussion and adoption of the proposed position statements. During the first House of Delegates, we heard that our organization has had a positive income for two years in a row for the first time since 1997. President McNamara’s message stressed the riches of AORN, which cannot be valued in money. She stated, “AORN is a unique organization in which you, the members, are the owner, the workforce, and the customer. That level of investment is why we are so passionate about our association.” Some of these non-monetary riches are member recruitment, specialty assemblies, intellectual capital, collegial support, Chapters, social awareness, international reach, and Foundation support.
The beautiful “Tapestry of Diversity” was unveiled at the opening session. AORN of Southern Arizona was lovingly woven into this symbolic work of art, which will now be displayed at AORN National Headquarters in Denver.
I would like to thank the membership, the Board of Directors, and Officers of AORN of Southern Arizona for the opportunity to serve as your President this year. We are fortunate to have Ellice Mellinger as our leader next year. I am confident, that under her leadership, we will continue to fulfill our mission of perioperative nursing education with the goal of excellent patient care.
Sincerely,
Kay Lingeman RN, BSN, CNOR
